Plumeria (Frangipani)
Plumeria rubra
Plumeria produces the most intoxicatingly fragrant flowers in the tropical world — waxy, pinwheel-shaped blooms in white, pink, yellow, and red that are used to make Hawaiian leis. The scent carries on warm evening air and is absolutely unforgettable. In frost-free areas it's a gorgeous small tree; elsewhere, grow in containers and overwinter indoors.
Care Guide
Plant in full sun with well-drained soil. Water during growing season, reduce in winter. Goes deciduous in winter (normal — don't panic at bare branches). Prune to shape in spring. Easy from cuttings — let cut end dry for a week, then plant. In zones below 10, grow in large containers and bring inside when temps drop below 50°F.
