Bougainvillea
Bougainvillea glabra
Bougainvillea is pure tropical drama — cascading masses of papery bracts in electric magenta, red, orange, purple, and white. The actual flowers are tiny; it's the colorful bracts that put on the show. It blooms best when stressed (drought and root-bound), making it one of the rare plants that thrives on neglect. Nothing else matches its color intensity.
Care Guide
Plant in full sun — absolute maximum sun for maximum bloom. Well-drained soil essential. Water sparingly once established — overwatering kills blooms. Prune after each bloom cycle to encourage new growth and flowers. Wear gloves — thorns are serious. In pots, keep root-bound for more blooms.
