Nandina (Heavenly Bamboo)
Nandina domestica
Nandina delivers 365 days of color — new growth emerges coppery-red, matures to green, then turns brilliant crimson in fall and winter. Clusters of bright red berries persist through winter. 'Firepower' (dwarf, 2 ft) is pure red in winter; 'Obsession' has the deepest burgundy. It's not actually bamboo — the lacy foliage just resembles it.
Care Guide
Plant in full sun for best color (tolerates shade). Any well-drained soil. Remove oldest canes at ground level to keep a natural shape — never shear. Virtually pest-free. Remove berries if birds are a concern (some evidence of toxicity to cedar waxwings in large quantities). Extremely drought tolerant once established.
