Bearded Iris
Iris germanica
Bearded Iris is one of the most stunning perennials in existence — ruffled, often fragrant blooms in literally every color combination from coal black to pure white, neon orange to deep blue. The 'beard' (fuzzy caterpillar-like hairs on the lower petals) comes in contrasting colors. Reblooming varieties like 'Immortality' bloom spring AND fall.
Care Guide
Plant rhizomes with the top exposed (don't bury). Full sun, well-drained soil — they rot in wet conditions. Divide every 3-4 years in late summer. Remove spent flower stalks. Trim foliage to 6-inch fans in fall. Watch for iris borers — remove affected rhizomes. Don't mulch over rhizomes.
