New England Aster
Symphyotrichum novae-angliae
New England Aster is the grand finale of the perennial garden — massive clouds of purple, pink, and blue daisy-like flowers covering the entire plant in September and October when everything else is fading. It's a native powerhouse that supports migrating monarch butterflies and dozens of other pollinators. 'Purple Dome' is a compact 18-inch variety.
Care Guide
Plant in full sun with average to moist soil. Pinch stems back by half in early June for compact, bushy growth (otherwise they flop). Divide every 2-3 years. Powdery mildew is common on lower leaves — good air circulation helps. Cut to ground after frost. Leave seed heads for birds.
