Planting

Start cool-season annuals indoors
Plant bare-root trees and shrubs
Divide summer/fall-blooming perennials (hosta, daylily, grasses)
Sow native prairie seed (spring window — before soil reaches 60°F)

Maintenance

Remove winter mulch from perennial beds gradually
Edge beds with flat spade or half-moon edger
Apply pre-emergent on lawn areas (NOT on prairie areas)
Top-dress beds with 1-2 inches of compost

Soil

Amend beds with compost based on soil test results
Turn compost pile
Prepare new bed areas (smother with cardboard for future prairie)
