Eastern White Pine
Pinus strobus
Eastern White Pine is the tallest native conifer in the East — a majestic tree with soft, feathery blue-green needles in clusters of five. The graceful, slightly irregular shape has a natural elegance that rigid spruces lack. It grows fast (2-3 ft/year) and makes an excellent privacy screen or windbreak. The soft whisper of wind through white pine needles is unforgettable.
Care Guide
Plant in full sun with moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Avoid roadside planting — very salt-sensitive. Water during drought, especially young trees. Can be sheared for denser growth. Drops needles in fall (normal — evergreens shed old needles annually). Watch for white pine weevil damage on the leader.
