Rhododendron
Rhododendron spp.
Rhododendrons are the royalty of shade-garden shrubs — massive trusses of flowers in every color from pure white to deep purple, held above bold, glossy evergreen foliage. A mature rhododendron in full bloom is one of the most spectacular sights in gardening. They range from 3-foot compact varieties to 15-foot specimens. The backbone of Pacific Northwest and Appalachian gardens.
Care Guide
Plant in dappled shade with moist, acidic, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. NEVER plant too deep — keep root ball slightly above grade. Mulch with pine needles. Deadhead spent flower trusses carefully (don't damage new growth buds just below). Shallow roots — don't cultivate near plants. Protect from winter wind and sun.
