Tulip Poplar
Liriodendron tulipifera
Tulip Poplar (not actually a poplar — it's in the magnolia family) is one of the tallest and most majestic eastern native trees. Unique tulip-shaped flowers with yellow-green petals and orange interiors bloom high in the canopy. The distinctively-shaped leaves turn brilliant gold in fall. Fast-growing, with a tall, straight trunk. State tree of Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee.
Care Guide
Plant in full sun with moist, well-drained soil. Needs room — eventually massive. Water during drought (susceptible to leaf drop in dry conditions). Minimal pruning — develops a strong central leader naturally. Aphids can cause sticky drip on cars — don't park underneath.
