River Birch
Betula nigra
River Birch is beloved for its stunning exfoliating bark — layers of salmon, cinnamon, and cream peel away to reveal beautiful patterns, especially striking in winter. 'Heritage' is the gold-standard cultivar with the most dramatic bark. Unlike white birch, it resists borers and tolerates heat and humidity. Multi-trunk specimens are especially gorgeous.
Care Guide
Plant in sun with moist to wet soil — it naturally grows along riverbanks. Water during drought (it's not drought-tolerant). Plant multi-trunk for best effect. Drops small twigs and leaves — keep away from pools and patios. Fast-growing shade tree. Prune in summer (bleeds sap if pruned in winter/spring).
