Tulip Poplar
Liriodendron tulipifera
Tulip Poplar (actually a magnolia relative, not a true poplar) is the tallest native hardwood in eastern North America, capable of reaching 150+ feet in forests. Its tulip-shaped flowers with orange interiors are unique among native trees. Distinctive square-tipped leaves turn bright yellow in fall. Fast-growing and long-lived.
Care Guide
Full sun, deep moist well-drained soil. Very fast growing — 3+ feet per year. Aphids can cause honeydew drip in summer. Intolerant of drought — will drop leaves in dry conditions. Needs room to grow — not for small lots.
