Ostrich Fern
Matteuccia struthiopteris
Ostrich Fern is the largest, most dramatic native fern — enormous vase-shaped fronds rising 3-6 feet tall that create an instantly lush, prehistoric atmosphere. In spring, the emerging fiddleheads are a gourmet delicacy. It spreads by underground runners to form impressive colonies. Perfect for naturalizing in moist, shady areas. Nothing creates a woodland feel faster.
Care Guide
Plant in partial to full shade with rich, moist soil. Loves the edges of streams, ponds, and rain gardens. Goes dormant in drought — keep consistently moist for best appearance. Spreads vigorously by runners — give it room or contain with barriers. Cut back brown fronds in late winter. The spring fiddleheads are edible when cooked.
