Hawthorns are tough, beautiful native trees with spring flowers, persistent red berries that feed birds all winter, and excellent fall color. 'Winter King' is the best landscape variety — heavy fruit set, exfoliating bark, and disease resistance. Thorns provide nesting security for songbirds.

Full sun, well-drained soil. Very drought tolerant. Choose disease-resistant varieties to avoid cedar-hawthorn rust and fire blight. Minimal pruning needed. Thorns can be 1-3 inches — be aware when planting near walkways.
