Baptisia (False Indigo)
Baptisia australis
Baptisia is a long-lived native perennial that forms a substantial shrub-like mound — spikes of pea-like flowers in deep indigo blue, followed by attractive charcoal-black seed pods that rattle in the wind. Once established, it lives for decades and is virtually indestructible. 'Decadence' series offers yellow, purple, and bi-color varieties. Slow to establish but worth the wait.
Care Guide
Plant in full sun with well-drained soil. Drought tolerant with deep taproots — do NOT try to transplant established plants. Takes 3 years to reach full size. No staking, no dividing, no fertilizer, no pests. Cut seed pods for dried arrangements or leave for winter interest. Nitrogen-fixing — actually improves soil.
