Ajuga (Bugleweed)
Ajuga reptans
Ajuga is a fast-spreading groundcover with a bonus — gorgeous blue-purple flower spikes in spring that rise above the bronze, purple, or variegated foliage. 'Chocolate Chip' has tiny burgundy leaves; 'Black Scallop' is deep purple-black; 'Burgundy Glow' has pink, white, and green variegation. Spreads rapidly to fill bare areas.
Care Guide
Plant in partial shade (tolerates sun in cool climates). Any moist soil. Spreads by runners — can be aggressive in lawn areas. Pull runners where you don't want it. Divide every few years. Crown rot can occur in humid, poorly drained spots. Mow after spring bloom to tidy up.
