Agave
Agave americana
Agave is the ultimate sculptural succulent — dramatic rosettes of thick, pointed leaves that make a bold architectural statement. Once established, it needs almost zero maintenance and virtually no water. Agaves bloom once in their lifetime (after decades), sending up a spectacular flower stalk up to 25 feet tall before dying, but leaving offsets (pups) to continue the colony.
Care Guide
Plant in full sun with fast-draining soil. No supplemental water once established (except in containers). Remove dead lower leaves for aesthetics. Watch for agave snout weevils in affected areas. Wear thick gloves when handling — the spine tips are sharp. Space generously — they get bigger than you think.
