Loropetalum chinense

Loropetalum has become the go-to foundation shrub in the South — deep burgundy-purple foliage topped with hot pink fringe-like flowers in spring. It blooms sporadically year-round. 'Purple Diamond' and 'Plum Delight' are top cultivars. It's replaced boxwood in many Southern landscapes because it adds color AND structure.

Care Guide

Plant in full sun for deepest purple color. Well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Prune after spring bloom to shape. Can take hard renewal pruning if overgrown. Fertilize with azalea food. Watch for leaf spot in humid weather. Protect from hard freezes in zone 7.
