Lilac
Syringa vulgaris
The lilac's fragrance is legendary — one of the most beloved scents in all of gardening. Huge cone-shaped flower clusters in purple, lavender, white, pink, and magenta bloom for 2-3 weeks in mid-spring. They need cold winters to bloom (poor in zone 8+). A single plant can live 100+ years. 'Bloomerang' re-blooms in fall.
Care Guide
Plant in full sun with good air circulation. Prune immediately after bloom — flower buds form in summer for next spring. Remove suckers to prevent spreading. Thin old stems periodically. Needs winter chill. Powdery mildew is common in late summer but doesn't harm the plant. Deadhead for neatness.
